The Land of Khizba That Had Long Been Ruined and the Flood for Those Who Disobeyed Allah’s Command

Prophet Khidr AS came to me just before dawn. He greeted me with peace and then said:

“O Ahmad, I love this place where you sit, and I would love it even more if you were to make the space above your house like this. It was the custom of yourancestorsto sit in high places before dawn, reciting the Qur’an and engaging in remembrance. Do you know? The finest morning practice of your ancestorswas self-reflection and seeking forgiveness, followed by praising Allah.

After Fajr, they would feed their animals—just like the ones in your home—and then feed the poor and orphans who passed by their house. Indeed, such deeds bring tranquillity to the heart and attract Allah’s mercy and blessings. You should follow their example.”

“O Ahmad, I have fulfilled Allah’s command to look after all your followers. Some of them think you have neglected them. Some believe you are enduring a great struggle. Some feel unsettled by your decisions and are disappointed. Some wonder how they might join you in business, full of hope. And some are simply waiting for the time foretold in the month of Hajj. Say to them: Ahmad is none other than Me — Balya bin Malkan — who instructed you to judge all matters on your ship by Allah’s command. And Allah is All-Wise and All-Knowing of the hearts and deeds of your followers.”

“O Ahmad, it is unjust for one who is oppressive to feel that he is the one oppressed, whilst within him lies the rights of others — including your rights. Such a person will not receive blessings, but hardship in life. As for such people, be patient until Allah reveals the truth and provides proof. Remain steadfast in your struggle until the arrival of the helper whom Allah will send to you. You must make clear and firm decisions and regulations, so your ship remains safe from destruction. Verily, Allah intends to bring down two great ships after yours — for they uphold that which is forbidden and disliked, and they conduct their business with usury and arrogance.”

“O Ahmad, do not reject those who wish to support you in your business. Allah does not measure the size of their contribution but rather the sincerity in their hearts. Accept their help and be trustworthy — except those who come after the month of Hajj has passed. Do you not recall how once there was a weak and scorned group that became strong through conviction and the sincerity of a freed slave, children, women, and the elderly? Take heed and learn from the past.”

“O Ahmad, be just in your dealings with your wives. Assign them equal responsibilities and do not burden them beyond their capacity. Such fairness will bring blessings and Allah’s pleasure. One cannot reach the shore if they paddle a boat weighed unevenly — it will sink. That is the parable of someone who holds two responsibilities but neglects Allah’s command to be just.”

“O Ahmad, hasten to fulfil the command to retreat in seclusion once your business obligations are complete. Take two workers — poor and orphaned young women who are knowledgeable — and give them fair wages that neither burden them nor yourself.”

“O Ahmad, tell your followers across your country: blessings will not descend upon those whose hearts are tainted with love for the world (hubuddunya), allowing Satan to control their hearts and minds. Verily, I am Balya bin Malkan, whom Allah commanded to soften the earth so that water would flow from it by His power. Let them guard their hearts from fatigue and despair — such vigilance brings peace and upholds the trust of Allah over those wells. Do they think that the reduction in water is a normal matter? No! If it were not for you, I would have sealed those springs, for they have forgotten their duty towards the poor under their care. Let them reform themselves and fulfil their responsibilities regarding the wells in their land. Let them ask you: Are they waiting for the rain to come and flood their fields until their wells are buried in thick mud? They must rectify their ways.”

“O Ahmad, Allah has shown that a small amount is sufficient to nourish and sustain the trees in their fields. Let them earnestly cultivate their lands with crops that bring blessings and benefit. Indeed, mankind is the steward of the earth, maintaining its function. The lands of Khizba have long been corrupted by substances containing poison. Let them return to their natural state in nourishing their fields. This will preserve both mind and heart in the bodies of their future generations. Allah brings disease and calamity due to the recklessness and negligence of His servants. I, Balya bin Malkan, shall teach you to reform the work of a scholar from whom you purchased knowledge — so that with ‘your hands’ will be created something natural that protects your descendants and theirs from the illnesses of today. Have not some already benefited from what you have created? It was not your hand that created it, but Allah who did so. Indeed, Allah will surely heal one who is ill — even when the scholars of the world have not found a cure.”

“And say to them, O Ahmad: Have they forgotten from what they were created? Indeed, they were created from the extract of coloured soil, yet they became arrogant. Tell them: What you have created did not come from intellect and knowledge as they imagine. Rather, it came purely from Allah, the Almighty, the Creator — the One whom they must worship. It came from the love and mercy of the Prophet Muhammad SAW for his Ummah and his love for his grandson, in whose heart was no pride. He is Allah, the One who transforms that which is disliked into something lawful and beneficial. Verily, Allah has commanded me to teach you justice in business and to extract (calculate and determine the legal rulings of) the rights of the poor and orphans from your enterprise (zakat, charity, and almsgiving). Such actions will protect you and your followers from usury and sin in business.”

“O Ahmad, I have not abandoned you as some may think — those who believe Balya bin Malkan has neglected you because you are busy with business and occupied with studying leaves and herbs. Their knowledge of me and you is very limited, so ignore them. I, Balya bin Malkan, have witnessed the lies spoken by tongues guided by imagination. None has used your fertiliser on their fields except on a few trees — and yet they speak falsehoods. Do they not realise that I, Balya bin Malkan, have long stood upon that land of theirs? Allah intends to warn them with rain and wind as a sign of the falsehood they have committed. And I have witnessed the truth of the words of some of your followers who have followed your teachings in cultivating their land.”

“O Ahmad, walk southward when the floods in that region submerge a house so only its front remains visible. Stand there until the waters recede. Verily, Allah wants the people of that place to realise their ignorance in allowing immorality and legalising gambling.”
