“The Reality of LaaKhaufun ‘AlayhimWala
Hum Yahzanuun and the Small Creatures in the Deepest Layers of the Earth”
Prophet
Khidr (AS) came to me in the midst of my busyness in worldly affairs
(office/workplace). Then he smiled, greeted me with peace, and said:
“O
Ahmad, a servant who has faith and piety towards Allah will be wise in
concealing his problems and the trials that befall him, for he knows that his
enemies will only laugh at him, while those who love him will be saddened.
Indeed, if someone is able to hide his problems, calamities, and all his pain
and suffering, and then raises both hands in supplication, it is Allah who will
resolve all his matters and erase his sorrow and grief, because Allah regards
him as among those who are patient and firmly trust in His help.
O
Ahmad, no one can attain tranquillity if he constantly seeks peace without
doing what Allah desires and has made obligatory upon this world. Truly, Allah
has only created everlasting peace and happiness in His Paradise. He did not
create tranquillity and joy in this world without trials and punishments. Those
who walk upon this earth are like travellers crossing a vast, winding, and
undulating desert. It is not the path that must be straightened, but rather the
heart and mind that must remain upright upon His commands and His guidance (the
Qur’an). In this way, the winding and uneven path can be endured with calmness
of heart and soul, together with the light of Allah in one’s heart and steps.
That is the true meaning of the rank: laakhaufun ‘alayhimwalaa hum yahzanuun
(no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve).
O
Ahmad, I, Balya bin Malkan, have met many scholars and people whom Allah
commanded me to meet. Not one of them experienced joy and happiness in this
world throughout their lives, except that they faced many tests and lessons
from Allah along the way. Indeed, there was never even a moment’s rest from
fulfilling Allah’s commands, from listening to the complaints of the people,
and seeking the best solutions for their problems. Often they faced insults and
scorn if they remained silent because Allah forbade them from speaking. Do you
think the path to Paradise can be attained merely by sitting and enjoying the
world? No. Allah’s Paradise is attained in the manner He has decreed and
chosen, not by following desires and pleasures, nor without toil and tears,
until one understands the language of Allah’s love upon him.
O
Ahmad, I observed what your brothers did to the withering trees. Then, through
you carrying out Allah’s command, those trees were revived by His permission,
and rain fell upon that land for three days as a sign of truth for all that Allah
commanded you. Thereafter Allah eased your efforts over three lands and opened
eleven through one. Should they not tremble if they reject the truth? And let
them be assured that what you do is not by your own desires.
O
Ahmad, do you know that Allah has bestowed honour upon you and upon your wives
because they have reached sincerity and complete submission to what Allah has
decreed for them? Do you know that I, Balya bin Malkan, know by Allah’s
permission that He has softened both their hearts? Truly, they are among
Allah’s servants who seek self-improvement. Do you not realise that Satan has
crept into your heart? Guard yourself from harbouring ill thoughts towards
them, lest your uncertainty burden their hearts. Bring them swiftly to the
place Allah has appointed. Indeed, Allah intends to forgive you for your
mistake, for you were too afraid to speak the truth. What you will say is not
from your own will, but by His command. So let your heart be at ease.
O
Ahmad, be patient with the promise of one who has broken his promise to you.
Indeed, Allah knows all that is hidden. He does not allow the unjust to live
joyfully except for the span of a single breath, after which they shall lose in
this world and the Hereafter. Be patient, for he is in a state of anxiety and
fear.
O
Ahmad, do not delay doing good, nor delay your prayers. Be swift in performing
Maghrib and Subh prayers. There is no concession for delaying them except
during travel or within the allowances of the law regarding obligatory prayers.
Verily, Allah does not need you, but you are the one who needs Him. Do not let
the weight of His command make you restless, nor fill your days with exhausting
busyness, until your sleep causes you to neglect the obligatory prayer due to
the fatigue you impose upon yourself. Do not do such a thing. Has Allah not
already made clear to you what you desired to know? Yet when He shows you
something different from what you expected, your heart feels heavy in carrying
it out, and you turn away from His command by busily engaging in acts of
goodness for the people? Know that no gap in a wall can be closed by taking
another wall to cover it. That is the parable of one who rejects Allah’s
command by performing righteous deeds that were never prescribed upon him,
hoping that Allah would erase the command that weighs upon his heart. Surrender
yourself and seek forgiveness from Him. Doing so will bring peace to your heart
and open His light upon your path once more. Indeed, were it not for your Noble
Grandfather, I would have left you in a dire state under Allah’s warning upon
your jaw and illness upon yourself. But Allah healed your sickness through the
prayer of your Noble Grandfather.
O
Ahmad, Allah has indeed created His creatures upon the surface of the earth and
deep within it, and it is He who governs all things. Allah knows all of His
creation, whether upon the surface or deep within the belly of the earth. Do
people think there is no life within the deepest layers of the earth? Truly,
human eyes cannot see how vast structures were built by a group of small
creatures before mankind was created. Do they not reflect? Say: there is no
Lord who governs the universe and all things except Allah, the Almighty, the
One who has full will over His creation. Has Allah not already informed you of
many things unknown to the scholars before you? Remain firm upon your journey
in accordance with His command.
O
Ahmad, write, and do not be ashamed to write it down. Because you are not your
Noble Grandfather Muhammad (SAW), the blood of your Noble Grandfather that
flows within you does not guarantee your safety from Satan’s whispers, nor
safety from Hellfire, except if you truly live in piety, perform righteous
deeds, and guard yourself and your heart from disgraceful traits.”
