The
Obligation to Struggle in Business for Ahmad and his Followers
Prophet Khidr (AS) came to me and said:
“O Ahmad, you must once again pay attention to the
rights of your body, and do not overburden yourself with thinking and learning about
what I have taught you. Indeed, in the day and the night are signs of Allah’s
power for mankind to live in devotion and submission to the decrees of Allah.
O Ahmad, the one who receives guidance is not the
same as the one who turns away from it. You must be patient with some of your
grandfather’s people who are aboard your vessel. One day, they will come to
understand the truth behind your struggles. Some of them say, ‘Why does it seem
like you only care about trade? Is that your purpose?’ Indeed, those who assume
that you are chasing worldly gain are the ones who fail to understand that all
of this comes from the Command of Allah, the Almighty. They must refrain from
such assumptions.
Say to them, O Ahmad, that I, Balya bin Malkan, ask
them: ‘Do they not see that what your “hands” have created is a cure that has
never existed before? Do they think it came from you?’ Verily, what you have
learnt and produced is from Allah, the Almighty. And do they not realise that
the remedy you have made for an illness with no prior cure is meant only to
heal those who truly repent and for those who believe in Allah, in your noble
grandfather Muhammad, and in the Qur’an as the true Book? Except for those who
do not believe in Allah but have a family member who holds firmly to a covenant
and fulfils their obligations as a dhimmi — they are bound to your vessel by
this pact. This is the path walked by your noble grandfather Muhammad. You must
follow it.
O Ahmad, indeed the wives of your noble grandfather
displayed traits that weighed heavily on his heart through their words and
actions when they were jealous. Verily, the Prophets are servants of Allah who
bear trials far greater than the messengers after them (the saints of Allah)
and their inheritors (the scholars). When Allah loves a righteous and learned
servant, Satan and his descendants will intensify their temptations upon the
servant’s wives, children, close family members, and students. Satan will not
leave them be, for he seeks to draw them all into Hell with him. But if they
are patient and fear Allah, Satan will despair and abandon them. Do your wives,
children, followers, and their partners not read JawahirulMakhfiyyah? Do
they not find within it writings that speak of Satan’s weakness and his
tendency to give up on those who are patient and God-fearing? Your wives, your
family, and everyone aboard your vessel must be patient and mindful of Allah.
If they knew the heavy burden Allah has placed on both your shoulders, they
would surely show patience.
O Ahmad, indeed the month of Hajj is a month of
victory for those who sincerely carry out Allah’s commands with all their heart
and might. The hardships, weariness, and poverty faced by the servants of Allah
are nothing but consequences of their own negative assumptions and ignorance.
Let them better themselves.
O Ahmad, Allah did not grant you the wells and the
trade upon the words you uttered over them, except as a sign of His power. You
must deal justly with both the wells and the trade. Allah seeks to ease the
burden of those who are in difficulty — those who wish to avoid usury and
desire to sit with you in trade. You must record this and bind yourself with
them in a strong and binding agreement, so that in time, your descendants and
theirs will become Allah’s righteous and wise servants in your future great
house of commerce. Indeed, it is not you or your hands that created the
medicines or all that exists within the business, but rather it is the “Hand of
Allah” that intends to show His Might over the world. You must place your trust
in Him and be patient.
O Ahmad, let them take heed of the signs that have
already come to pass. And do not hesitate to declare that Allah is the One and
Only God, and that your noble grandfather Muhammad is the Prophet who brought
mercy to all worlds, and that the Qur’an is the Word of Allah conveyed by the
noble Prophet Muhammad in perfect form. Is not all that you have created
derived from verses of the Qur’an? Say to the scholars in their presence
boldly: ‘I, Ahmad Fahmi bin A. Syams, am not the one who made it — it came from
the guidance of Allah (the Qur’an), and from my noble grandfather Muhammad, the
Messenger of Allah.’ Truly, what you will explain to them cannot be understood
unless they believe in Allah, in His Messenger Muhammad, and in the Qur’an.”
